Vanessa Carlisle is a California tramp with no hometown, and she writes like it. Her work moves through an eccentric world where the boundaries of genre between philosophy, literature, erotica, politics and culture criticism tend to melt.
While still a psychology student at Reed College, she co-authored I Was My Mother’s Bridesmaid: Young Adults Talk About Thriving in a Blended Family (Wildcat Canyon Press, 1999) with her sister Erica Carlisle. After three years of living in Hollywood and working as a dancer for live bands, she moved to Boston and finished an MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College. She taught writing at Emerson and Wheelock Colleges, danced with a neo-burlesque troupe and a Hawaiian lounge act, and worked on her novel until a community of artists called her home to the West coast. Her work has appeared in many literary and trade magazines, and her novel A Crack in Everything is now available for purchase at Amazon.com and BN.com.
As a doctoral student in the English Literature and Creative Writing PhD at the University of Southern California,Vanessa now writes, teaches, and edits manuscripts from Los Angeles—unless she’s doing it from the road.
